One of the biggest drawbacks of the MP3 format is the compression your tunes get hit with that can reduce the sound quality. Who it's for: Audio enthusiasts that refuse to skimp on sound quality. Why you should buy this: You want the best sound that a portable player can deliver. The iPod Touch is small and light and comes wrapped in cool metal finishes, with a gorgeous retina display that makes browsing between albums easy. With the ability to store up to 32 gigabytes of your favorite tunes, plus smartphone-like functionality including Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connectivity and access to the Apple App Store, there is no better iPod for casual listeners and those who don't want to carry a smartphone or drain its battery. And while Apple discontinued the iconic portable music player this year, still, the ever-friendly user interface and the sleek beauty of the experience (and of the iPod itself) earns the seventh-generation iPod Touch a spot on our list - if you can still find one, that is. Who it's for: Casual listeners, intentional users of non-smartphones.ĭespite the iPod's iconic nature, the rise of the iPhone has taken most of the shine off the gadget that reinvented the way we listen to music. Why you should buy this: You're an Apple devotee and you prefer the iPod family. Plus, its low-risk price tag means you won't need to panic if it somehow falls into a puddle. The Clip Sport also includes 8GB of onboard flash storage, as well as an SD card slot that allows for more storage space to be added in later.Ĭapable of handling most non-hi-res 16-bit audio file types (including FLAC files), this little guy is perfectly equipped for a marathon or a Tough Mudder. The player features an LCD screen so you don't need to rely on the "shuffle" function. What the Clip Sport lacks in audio quality, it more than makes up for with several useful features and rock-solid 25-hour battery life.Īpart from the eponymous clip, SanDisk equipped this workout buddy with an FM radio tuner so you can listen to your favorite morning talk show as you take your brisk pre-breakfast stroll. Thankfully, MP3 players with clips - like the SanDisk Clip Sport - were built specifically to resolve that issue. If you're running, the phone is probably bouncing uncomfortably in your pocket, or you're forced to hold it with a vice grip because you wore shorts without pockets (stop forgetting the shorts with pockets!). Using your smartphone to listen to music while exercising is nearly always a hassle. Who it's for: Anyone looking to listen to music while they work out. Why you should buy this: It's lightweight, durable, and built for exercise, with reasonable storage capacity and excellent battery life. With its up to 45-hour battery life (this is depending on the file type and whether ambient sound mode is on or off), brilliant color touchscreen, and Bluetooth headphone capabilities, the Sony NW-A55/B Walkman is a well-balanced package of performance and value, earning it top honors. That's on top of the player's S-Master HX noise filtering and DSee HX upscaling, which enhances even the most compressed of audio files. Speaking of the latter: The NW-A55/B supports High-Res Audio playback, meaning you'll be getting sound that is even richer than the type of audio you'd find on a CD (where applicable). And it's no coincidence that the Sony NW-A55/B Walkman MP3 player just so happens to be our favorite portable audio device you can nab right now, but that said, they're getting harder and harder to come by.įeaturing a state-of-the-art design and engineering, gold-plated circuit boards, and premium aluminum are utilized for faithful sound delivery and low impedance, ensuring the bones of the NW-A55/B are just as strong as the audio formats the player supports, which include MP3, WAV, FLAC, Apple Lossless, WMA, AIFF, and more. When it comes to audio reproduction, Sony is one of the strongest names on the market, especially when it comes to the brand's industry-leading MP3 players. Who it's for: Those looking for a dedicated audio device that is packed with some of today's best listening tech. Personally, we always liked the Nobushi, just because you could poke people with a big stick from long range. The Samurai faction themselves covers all facets of the Japanese warriors playbook, so if you fancy being a dishonorable Shinobi, the choice is yours, though the big Shugoki lads are an option too. Still, don’t tell us you didn’t leap straight towards the Samurai faction the first time you booted up For Honor. A multiplayer game to decide which historical combatant would totally trounce your favourite in a fight, For Honor originally included Vikings and Knights as well as Samurai, though the game has been updated since to include fighters like the Chinese-inspired Wu Lin faction, along with Roman Gladiators and Centurions for the Knights faction. Technically, For Honor isn’t the purest samurai game ever made. With new martial arts moves to learn and weapons to craft, there’s a lot of depth here already, and it’s only going to get better by release. As the leader of the Getsu Clan, you’ve charged headlong into hell to find out why the barrier between the living world and the dead world has weakened, and also to find your missing brother along the way. Undying Moon is a hack-and-slash with roguelike elements, as you control a distant descendant of the original game. 35 years is certainly a long time to wait for a follow-up game, but Konami are in the process of delivering thanks to GuruGuru with GetsuFumaDen: Undying Moon, which is currently available in early access before launching this year on PC and Switch. GetsuFumaDen might be one of the oldest franchises going at the minute, with the original game from Konami launching in 1987. Or, you could just waste everyone then leave. As all three are vying for control, you’ll prove to be the difference maker through your decisions. With the British introducing their culture to Japan, turning Amihama into a “little Britain”, three factions have now emerged. Way of the Samurai 4 pits you as an unnamed ronin making their way to the port town of Amihama during the 19th century. It’s not just about cutting down the bandits and rogues standing in your way, but the different factions you ally yourself with, or who you choose to kill and spare, that’ll ultimately decide your fate. Living life as a samurai would no doubt be hard work, but the Way of the Samurai series adds some excitement, intrigue and, most of all, choice to your time as a wandering swordsman. They’ve already said they’re interested, after all.Īs a game, Ishin copies the character models and actors that have featured in the Yakuza series and pastes them over a template of real Japanese folklore and legends. That’s why it’s at 15th.īy all accounts though, Ishin is an all-time great samurai game, so hopefully including it here will lead to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio porting them to the modern platforms in future. In an ideal world, we’d love to recommend both Yakuza Ishin with the same level of enthusiasm as the other games on this list, but considering the fact that neither Ishin or predecessor Kenzan saw any kind of release outside of Japan, it’s hard to do that. Relationship lines – the out-of-hierarchy lines connecting nodes in different branches – can only be straight at present. Here’s an example of a MindMup map, built for this review: click for a larger image The strongly-curved hierarchy lines turn out to be a good shape for making best use of space for your map (see the example here, and the ‘Free Movement’ section, below). There is also an option for straight lines in place of the curves. The appearance is quite conventional: Bubbles joined by curved hierarchy lines. You might get the impression that MindMup is less capable than it is, because some quite important functions are somewhat hidden, but there are easily-found web pages for help, hints and shortcuts and I’ve mentioned some here. Starting to map with MindMup is easy – their motto of “Zero-friction free online mind mapping” is one that its designers have taken seriously. That’s not to say that it’s a toy as it can be used for serious mapping. This makes it an attractive tool for school use. It supports multi-user, simultaneous access and, if you’re using MindMup’s free storage or storing maps locally on you computer, it requires no log in. MindMup is a web-based mind mapper that you can use free, with no limit on the number of maps. You might ask yourself ‘why not use a free web-based mapper?’ but for expert users of FreePlane, the fact that you can use all the hacks that this software offers to adapt it to your own needs and preferences can be a strong motivation. There are introductory videos and documents hereand they look pretty clear to me. If you’re familiar with the Freeplane icon, I think you’ll like the Freeplane-collaborative-tools logo, it looks like a squadron in close formation:įreeplane is open source, so the source code for Freeplane-collaborative-tools is open as well. The heavy lifting is done by your choice of versioning system: CVS, SVN or GIT, and this synchronizes the various copies of a map on request. Users work on their own local copies of the mindmap and periodically publish the modifications on a central server from where they can fetch other users contributions. Instead it is a Freeplane extension using a versioning system. This is not a web-based mapper like MindMeister, Coggle or MindMup. He calls it Freeplane-collaborative-tools. Sébastien Georget recently announced a personal initiative to allow Freeplane users to work together on a map without all the emailing back and forth, and spotting changes to copy to your own map. I haven’t tried it, but yes, apparently so. It responds to its wake word (“Hey Sonos”) and natural speech well during testing. Meanwhile, Sonos’s own voice control is focused just on music playback commands, rather than controlling smart home or automation features. There’s no Google Assistant – Sonos cites a change in technical requirements for third-party devices that would need a “heavy engineering lift” for the Era, so it seems they’re at an impasse. The Era speakers are the first to host Sonos’s own voice control (available in English and French only), alongside Amazon’s Alexa. If you’re brand new to the Sonos ecosystem, don’t worry – every bit of the app is easy to navigate for tech pros and novices alike. You can also control every element of the speaker: its name, which room it’s in, playback, multi-room grouping, voice control, EQ settings and more. The app lets you integrate a huge amount of music sources, from all the major streaming services ( Apple Music, Amazon Music, Tidal and more) to various internet radio stations. The current Sonos S2 platform makes the whole experience that much smoother and more sophisticated. The Sonos control app is where the speaker’s multitude of functions and features are unlocked. There’s no support for spatial audio like big brother Era 300 (the Era 100’s small form factor wouldn’t do justice to the spatial audio effect, says Sonos), but 24-bit audio streaming is supported for local files and through Qobuz and Amazon Music Unlimited. Pairing is pleasingly swift with our iPhone 12, while the connection remains stable throughout. It uses Bluetooth 5.0 and the standard AAC and SBC codecs are supported. The Era range marks the first time Sonos has included Bluetooth in its wi-fi-based home speakers and the flexibility is more than welcome. It does sell the line-in adapter (USB-C to 3.5mm aux) on its website for £19 / $19 – which feels like a rather steep price to pay for a small dongle. The downside is that you’ll need an adapter to complete the wired connection, but Sonos doesn’t include it in the box. You’ll also find a USB-C line-in connection for hard-wiring sources like a turntable or music player. While you can tap the speech bubble icon on/off to enable/disable voice control, Sonos has added this extra physical switch for full privacy and peace of mind if you never, ever want any voice assistant listening in. Sliding our finger along this ‘trough’ changes the volume smoothly and at satisfying increments (albeit a bit too keenly at times).Īround the back, you’ll find the Bluetooth pairing button and a switch that turns the speaker’s mic on or off. Touch capacitive buttons return for music playback and voice control, and there’s a new volume slider in the form of a ‘trough’ in the top panel. The speaker’s interface and on-unit controls have been updated, too. Sonos is typically tight-lipped about power ratings, but even a quick listen confirms the new Era 100 sounds louder and more powerful than the old model.įeatures Stereo pairing, Sonos voice control, Amazon Alexa voice control, Trueplay tuning, Adjustable EQĬonnections USB-C line-in (separate adapter required) All three drivers are powered by their own Class D amplifier. Sonos says this should deliver "detailed stereo separation" and deeper bass. To that end, inside are two angled tweeters with custom waveguides, alongside a woofer that’s 25 per cent bigger than before. One of the biggest changes for the new Era 100 is that it delivers stereo sound. Why the change to the shape? This isn’t done just for aesthetics it’s also to accommodate the new drivers inside the Era 100. The Era 100 comes in a matte black or matte white finish, and the wraparound grille now stretches to the edges more than before for a seamless look. We found it easy to fit onto any shelf, desk, table or corner in the home – that’s near a mains socket, of course. The Era 100 is one inch (about 2cm) taller) and a tad heavier too (2.02kg vs 1.85kg) but it’s still a compact wireless speaker. The rounded square design of the One is gone the new Era 100 is a more oval shape. The Era 100 has been refreshed from the ground up, with Sonos stating that there isn’t a single bit of the old One in the new Era 100.īoth models are in keeping with Sonos’s clean, minimal design and are built to a high standard, but the new speaker’s shape is fairly different. |
